Words: Larry Vacala, Otis Wilson, Donald Trump

Larry Vacala joins the MASONRY STRONG Podcast to talk about his incredible journey in the masonry industry, what it's been like to see the industry change over the years, and where he sees the industry heading in the future.

Larry's Beginnings in the Masonry World

Larry Vacala’s journey into the masonry industry began with a family legacy. Growing up as one of 11 siblings in the Vacala family, construction was a family affair.

First Steps in Masonry

Fresh out of high school, Larry didn't waste any time. He jumped straight into construction, gaining his initial experience on job sites without formal training. It was during this hands-on learning phase that he discovered his passion for masonry.

Larry's early exposure to the field was instrumental in shaping his career. His work for a general contractor who collaborated with a mason contractor opened doors to a pathway that would define his future.

Growing with the MCAA

Larry's journey with the MCAA further solidified his commitment to masonry. His ambition to explore commercial work led him to launch a commercial contracting company, F and V Masonry. This endeavor connected him with the MCAA of Chicago, providing a fertile ground for professional growth.

A Newfound Passion

Restoration work captivated Larry at a time when new masonry markets were competitive. Working in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb rich in historic buildings, Larry found a niche catering to restoration needs. From fireplaces and chimneys to tuckpointing, restoration allowed him to apply his skills in meaningful ways.

The alignment of personal passion and professional opportunity allowed Larry to excel in this arena.

Advancements in the Masonry Industry

The masonry industry has witnessed remarkable technological advancements over the years, and Larry's forward-thinking approach positioned him at the forefront. Embracing new techniques and technologies was a hallmark of his career.

Larry's firm was one of the early adopters of hydromobiles and drone technology for major restoration projects in Illinois.

Technology's Role in Masonry

The transformative power of technology in masonry cannot be overstated. From using drones for project assessments at significant sites like Lane Tech High School to software adaptations for tracking construction progress, Larry ensured his team remained cutting-edge.

Leadership Role and MCAA Chairmanship

Larry's journey with the MCAA saw him ascend to various leadership roles, culminating in his position as chairman. His tenure as chairman proved transformative, allowing him to travel extensively, meet industry leaders, and learn best practices from different regions.

His leadership facilitated cross-pollination of ideas, fueling a vibrant exchange of innovations and strategies.

A Presidential Encounter

A highlight of Larry's career was a once-in-a-lifetime meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House. Initially visiting Washington, D.C., for a meeting with the Department of Labor, Larry's trip took an unexpected turn thanks to a friend's invitation.

The encounter, originally a White House tour, turned into a personalized experience with President Trump himself, leaving a lasting impression on Larry.

Building Future Generations

Larry's passion extended beyond his personal career, driving efforts to engage and inspire the next generation in masonry. Collaborating with former NFL player Otis Wilson, he initiated programs for youth integration into the trades.

This initiative aimed to provide career paths in masonry to high school students, particularly from underrepresented communities, advocating for vocational training as an alternative to traditional college education.

Supporting Charitable Causes

In addition to youth engagement, Larry's work with various charitable organizations, including those affiliated with major sports teams like the Chicago Bears and the White Sox, allowed him to connect with influential figures. His involvement expanded his network and showcased his dedication to giving back to the community.

The Evolution of Restoration and Masonry

As the industry adapts to modern needs, restoration remains a dynamic and evolving field. Larry highlighted how advancements such as 3D printing and non-invasive imaging technologies have redefined restoration work.

These innovations not only enhance accuracy but also improve efficiency and safety in restoration projects.
