Plant for Lightweight Clay Aggregate
GENEVA, ILLINOIS A construction contract has been signed for the first commercial production furnace for "SCR veri-lite," the new lightweight clay aggregate for brick, structural tile and architectural terra cotta, Robert B. Taylor, Director of the Structural Clay Products Research Foundation, announced. The Foundation is the research arm of the brick and tile industry.

Mapleton Development, Inc., Minerva, Ohio, is the first member plant to be licensed by SCPRF for "SCR veri-lite" production. The contract was signed with the Selas Corporation of America for the installation of a $300,000 plant with a capacity of 4,000 pounds of aggregate per hour. Manufacture of glazed facing tile units using the new material is expected to begin late this year.

When added to regular clay, "SCR veri-lite" produces brick and tile which are significantly lighter in weight with all the color and texture of traditional clay products, It has sufficient compressive strength for today's construction needs.

"Extensive plant trials during the past year have demonstrated to Mapleton Development many advantages in using the aggregate in structural clay products," Taylor reported. In the production of structural glazed facing tile, full scale firing tests have shown weight reductions of 17 to 18 per cent when the clay contained 33 per cent "SCR veri-lite" by volume. Drying and firing shrinkages were also markedly reduced, according to Taylor. A substantial saving in fuel was noted in the tile which were produced in a periodic down draft kiln. Reg.
