THE BETTER USE OF BRICK
This eight-page, two color booklet has been designed to stimulate the designer, architect, builder and home owner to a greater use of brick. Casper Neer, AIA, of Alexandria, Va., has developed these imaginative ideas and these attractive sketches are the fruits of his study.
New Mid-Manhattan Tower Uses Brick
For Color, Contrast and Economy
A new 41 story office building will soon be completed in mid-town Manhattan at the corner of 42nd Street and Madison Avenue. Principle features of the new structure will be black brick and white marble. Owners of the new building, John J. Reynolds, Inc., and builders, the George A. Fuller Co., were persuaded to use this combination by New York architect, Eli Jacques Kahn, partner of Kahn and Jacobs. First, he argued that there are too many curtain-woll structures with vast exponses of glass today. He said these were not only inept structures, "but also created almost insolvable air-conditioning and heating problems." To convince his clients, Mr. Kahn constructed a model 25 feet wide and 50 feet high. Construction on the $25 million building then began. The building will have black brick piers extending its entire vertical length, alternating with glass and aluminum panels. A band of white Georgie Cherokee marble girdles the building on three sides above the lobby entrance. The building will have a gross area of 792,402 square feet of rentable space.
