New Experimental Masonry House
A new concept in masonry construction is a prominent feature of the National Association of Homebuilders' new experimental house in Rockville, Maryland. Two different designs of prefabricated concrete masonry panels, which can be assembled indoors and put in place almost irrespective of weather conditions, were selected.
Panels of solid split block were used to enclose the combined garage and carport, while split block was alternated in the prefabricated fence panels to produce a screen wall effect.
Fabricated and furnished by the National Concrete Masonry Association, Washington, D.C., the panels were constructed with integrally white split block, 2 5/8 inches x 15 5/8 inches, 2½ inches thick. The masonry units were bonded together with an epoxy mortar, resulting in mortar joints 1/16 inch high or less.
Field erection of the nonload-bearing garage panels consisted of placing two panels, one on top of the other between wood supports to form a 45 inch wide by 94 inch high masonry panel. The panels were then secured to the posts with steel angles and lag screws. The garage panels weigh approximately 32 pounds per square foot.
The garage of the experimental house features prefabricated panels of white concrete split block. An epoxy mortar was used to bond the masonry units together, resulting in mortar joints 1/16" thick or less. The panels were constructed, furnished and installed by NCMA.
To achieve a uniformly attractive appearance on either side of the fence, a split block was produced so that the rugged texture characteristics of this type concrete masonry unit would be exposed on both surfaces. The fence was erected by placing the panels on concrete footings 12 inch in diameter, 53 inches apart on center. The panels were then tied to the footings with a plate which bears on the top of adjacent panels and connects to a vertical steel rod imbedded in the footing. Adjacent panels are also tied with a small plate fastened to the face of the panels. Each of the split block fence panels is 51 inches wide by 62 inches high and weighs approximately 550 pounds. The openings account for about 20% of the total fence area.
