STUDY EARTHQUAKE

An inspection team of three structural engineers from the Portland Cement Association arrived in Anchorage, Alaska, today to survey damage caused by the devastating earthquake of Good Friday. (March 27)

Purpose of the survey is to study the seismic resistance of concrete and other structures to the violent tremors that struck March 27. Findings will be incorporated in PCA's continuing earthquake study of major quakes of the past decade.

In the party are Walter E. Kunze, Jr., director of engineering services for the Association; John A. Sbarou- nis, PCA supervising structural engineer; and James E. Amrhein, super- visiny structural engineer in the As- sociation's Los Angeles District.

Kunze also will represent the Ame- rican Concrete Institute, as he did last year when he and Amrhein were mem- bers of a similar delegation to survey damage from the severe quake in Skopje, Yugoslavia. A report of the Skopje survey was presented by Kunze last month at the annual meet- ing of the MCAA in Chicago.

Results of the Association's long- time study of ground motion and the behavior of structures in earthquakes have been published in "Design of Multistory Reinforced Concrete Build- ings for Earthquake Motions." The manual contains current information on the earthquake-resistant design of multistory reinforced concrete build- ings.

Schedule, Cost, and Profit Control with PERT: A Comprehensive Guide for Program Man agement by Robert W. Miller, Director of Management Sciences, Raytheon Company. 222 pages plus index: 62 illustrations: 5.5/8 x8-3/8; McGraw-Hill, $8.50. Publication date: November, 1963.

"Schedule, Cost, and Profit Control with PERT" covers the entire field of PERT Management Systems as the have evolved up to the present. PERT Management Systems represent a revolutionary and rapidly growing new field of management techniques concerned with the planning and control of complex, "one-time-through" programs. They represent, the author explains, a significant departure from conventional planning and control techniques which trace their origis back to Taylor, Gantt, and the beginnings of Scientific Management.

The book describes the use PERT techniques not only as they apply to large-scale military and spa development programs, but also as they apply to a wide spectrum of commercial, industrial, and other economic planning and control activities. Mr. Miller provides a practical, detailed treatment of the problems and strategies of successfully implementing PERT, and his book extends the basic PERT/TIME concept into PERT/COST and into the areas of equipment or product performance and covers the impact of these techniques on profit.
