Alpha Portland Cement Co. Report
EASTON, PA. Alpha Portland Cement Company reported net income in the third calendar quarter amounted to 40 cents a share down from 56 cents a share in the like 1964 period. Lower earnings were attributed to the lost business effects of a lengthy major strike that closed five of the company's eight plants until three weeks into the third quarter.
J. Stewart Baker, Jr., Alpha president, said the company was making progress in its effort to recapture business lost during the strike, and he expected fourth quarter cement shipments would equal those of last year. However, he noted that net earnings for the final quarter will probably be less than last year since income contributed from sale of production payments in the last quarter this year will be less than the like period last year.
A.I.A. HONORS THREE CITIES
WASHINGTON, D.C. Three cities joined the list of communities awarded a "Citation for Excellence in Community Architecture" by The American Institute of Architects.
Society Hill in Philadelphia, Pa., was the winning nominee of the Institute's Pennsylvania Region, honored as a convincing reconciliation of old and new. The citation was presented to the citizens of Philadelphia and their mayor James H. J. Tate by Willard S. Hahn of Allentown, director of AIA's Pennsylvania region, during the annual convention of the Pennsylvania Society of Architects at Hershey Pa.
Village West, an ingeniously designed new low-rental development in Louisville, Ky., won a citation for the AIA's East Central Region, which includes the states of Indiana and Kentucky. The citation was presented at a meeting of the West Kentucky Chapter in Louisville by Walter Scholer Jr. of Lafayette. Ind., regional director.
Downtown Salt Lake City's Second Century Plan was the winning nominee of the Western Mountain Region. AIA. presented by regional director James M. Hunter FAIA of Boulder, Colo. during the regional conference at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Bliss & Laughlin Earnings Up
Bliss & Laughlin Industries reported earnings for nine months at $2.29 per share compared to $2.01 for the same period in 1964. Total net income for the period was 52, 317,449 versus $2,038,044 in 1964. Sales and revenues for the nine months were $58,234,888 against $55,237,102 for 1964.
In his report to shareholders, Fred J. Robbins, President, noted that both sales and earnings for the period were affected by the 84 day work stoppage of the company's Harvey and Buffalo plants, the company's largest steel processing facilities. Nevertheless, improved earnings from the other BLI divisions will supplement those in the steem division and 1965 corporate earnings are expected to exceed those of 1964.
