In Memoriam
Edward R. Murphy
Edward Richard Murphy, Managing Director of Vermiculite Institute from November, 1947, to October, 1965, died October 19, 1965, after a prolonged illness at the age of 62.
Ed Murphy gave direction and status to Vermiculite Institute, and over the years was its principal spokesman at the conference tables of many industry related groups throughout this country and Canada.
He was given the "Award of Merit" by the American Society For Testing and Materials in June, 1964, for "His Vigorous role in the development of Standards within Committee C-11 on Gypsum and for his active interest in promoting the use of Society standards in building codes". He had also been cited as a "Life member of the Western Society of Engineers," and as a "25 years or more" member of the Building Officials Conference of America. Early in 1965 he was also selected for inclusion in "Who's Who in the Midwest" for his outstanding contributions in the building field.
Ed Murphy is survived by his widow, Muriel Snyder Murphy, and by his daughter, Mrs. Janet Elizabeth McLaughlin.
Establish Testing Facility
EASTON, PA. A comprehensive applied research and testing facility has been established at nearby Martins Creek to serve the eight cement plants of the Alpha Portland Cement Company, J. Stewart Baker, Jr., company president, announced.
The facility occupies approximately 8,000 square feet of space of a former administration building used by the company at the Martins Creek site. A small working cement kiln has been installed in addition to the research and testing laboratories. The latter include facilities for chemical, x-spectrophotometric, microscopic, petrographic, and environmental analysis and testing.
