People & Events
SCPI's recent issue of Brick & Tile features in beautiful color the magnificent Grundtvig Church in Copenhagen, Denmark. If you haven't seen this issue, we heartily suggest that you secure a copy. Koehring Co. has announced the election of H. S. Jeske and D. W. Marchant to its Board of Directors. Jeske is President and General Manager of the firm's Buffa-No Springfield Div. and Marchant is Vice President, Operations, in charge of Kochring's Excavator Group. Orval Auhl has been appointed by AGC as that group's representative on the new National Joint Board.

The later part of March and the First part of April turned out to be busy times. On March 31st George Miller underwent surgery at Hinsdale Hospital and by this writing is back at work. Then on Wednesday, April 14th, a fire in the 208 S. LaSalle St. Bldg. made it necessary to evacuate the Executive Offices. Things are now back to normal. MCA of Milwaukee had a fine display at the Milwaukee Home Show. James Ridgway, AIA, has been named to the staff of SCPI. The Colorado Mason Contractors Association at their April meeting heard Dick Moure, of the Mountain States Employers Council explain the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Did you see the April issue of Fortune? It has a beautiful section on "American Masonry" which features stone. The Spring Informational Dinner Meeting of the Unit Masonry Association of Cincinnati held on April 1st had as its principal speaker Carl Roth, Portland Cement Association, who presented a discussion on (continued on page 20)

Plan Theater Party

The Mason Contractors Association of Milwaukee has planned a Theater Party for Friday evening, May 21, at the Sunset Playhouse, Elm Grove, Wis. Featured that evening at the Playhouse will be "A Shot In The Dark", a light comedy by Marcel Achard. Those interested in attending should contact the MCA Theater Committee at 16813 West Greenfield Ave., New Berlin, Wis. Tickets are $10 per couple.

Houston Meeting
HOUSTON, TEXAS - The featured program at the April 19th meeting of the Associated Masonry Contractors of Houston was "The Contemporary Bearing Wall." This timely subject was presented by Howard Dudding, Program Chairman. Reporting on the State Executive Meeting held in Dallas recently were Cecil Barker and Jim Leavesley.

Squash Tournament
The Detroit Mason Contractors Association on Wednesday, April 21st held their 2nd Annual Squash Tournament. Following the tournament a banquet and dinner dance was held at Eckners Restaurant.

Utah Masonry Conference
SALT LAKE CITY The Fifth Annual Utah State Masonry Convention was held on Saturday, March 31st, at the Terrace Ballroom. Featured on the program were Sterling W. Sill, Keynote Speaker, whose topic was "Build Well", and Paul White who presented "Credit Union Outlook". The "Transportation Index to Future Building Needs" was discussed by J. Edward Johnston while Professor Donald J. Bergsma, University of Utah, gave a highly interesting slide presentation.

General Chairman of the event was G. David Heath with Marilyn Heath the Convention Secretary. Other Committees were: Publicity & Attendance Bill Hughes, Ted May, Elwyn (continued on page 20)

CLEVELAND, OHIO The '65 Home & Flower Show again provided the setting for the City Apprentice Competition giving the huge audience an excellent opportunity to view the fine training being given the bricklayer apprentices in the City of Cleveland.

City Champion is Dave Chaplin, indentured to M & N Constructors, with runner-up being Wayne Hanzel, indentured to Schmacke Construction Co. Third place went to Robert Lucht, indentured to Paugh & Brown, Inc. while fourth place was awarded to Paul Miraglio, indentured to Joseph Foti.

Judging the finals were Anthony Gattozzi, Commissioner of Architects for the City of Cleveland; Richard Prescott, MCA Member; Earl Shobe, head architect for the Board of Education; Thomas Davis, secretary-treasurer of the Ohio State Bricklayers" Conference; Nate Singer, Building Commissioner for the City of Cleveland and Archie Stephens, secretary-treasurer of Local No. 5.

Honor Apprentices
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. Nine bricklayer apprentices were the guests of the Indianapolis Bricklayers Joint Apprenticeship Committee at a course completion dinner. Principal speaker and toastmaster for the evening was Jack Schwarzer, Training Consultant for the Labor Department's Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training.
