home less all tax and social security deductions
and after deflating for price hikes was lower this March than a year ago. Money income for manufacturing workers is up. Purchasing power is not. By contrast, corporate profits rose 15% in 1965 and zoomed again in the first quarter. The unions are expected to push for wage packages that will add at least 5% to labor costs.
GET SET FOR A NEW RASH OF STRIKES
many of them by rank-and-filers. Workers are getting festive at failure of their leaders to win large gains. The fact that long-term contracts rule out negotiations now is brushed aside. The men are showing their dissatisfaction with things with wild-cat strikes. Union members are rejecting contracts, now being negotiated, as inadequate. Their tone will get more militant. They'll back demands with strike votes.
SOME UNIONS WILL PUSH FOR ESCALATOR CAUSES
in their new contracts, to provide insurance against continued large increases in consumer prices. Escalators went out of fashion some years ago when the indexes slowed their rise, and unions wanted a surer method of increasing wages. But now that prices are surging, they want to offset the impact on take-home pay again.
PRESIDENT JOHNSON PLANS TO CAMPAIGN
for a Democratic Congress this fall, to do what he can to keep his lopsided majority in the House. His large bloc is heavily responsible for his successes with the Great Society programs. He doesn't want to lose this edge now. Yet the polls show that his own popularity is slipping and may hurt his supporters... just as it has helped in the past. So he is tempted to go to the people for some personal persuading and to try to repair his own battered image at the same time. Democrats are certainly optimistic at the primary victories won by supporters of the President's Viet Nam policy. They are hoping this means that the war will not be such a key issue in November. But they are still glum about inflation.
NIXON VERSUS ROMNEY
that's the way the race for the GOP nomination shapes up at this early date. The lines are already beginning to form. Richard Nixon is emerging as the candidate of the Republican conservatives. He has their backing in many states. And he would have Goldwater's blessing. He would have almost all the South's delegates before the convention opened.
The liberals hope to avoid their big mistake of 1964. They want to submerge their differences and rally round one man-Romney. Many do not deem him a liberal. But he is getting liberal support. Much of it tends to be anti-Nixon feeling rather than pro-Romney enthusiasm. Romney has already won the backing of New York's Governor Rockefeller and his friends.
