V.I. Holds 28th Annual Convention
Vermiculite sales, industry-wide, for 1968 increased over 1967, and the upward trend is continuing, T. W. Pickthall, president of the Vermiculite Institute, reported to delegates at its 28th annual meeting held at the Grand Hotel, Point Clear, Ala., April 20-24.

A. D. Webster of Montreal, Canada, was named president to succeed Pickthall. L. A. Barron was returned as managing director, and D. J. Boone, as treasurer.

T. F. Peifer, chairman of the institute's Concrete and Roofing Committee, reported that this Committee had an extremely active year. A number of fire tests of vermiculite concrete decks were conducted, and there were meetings with the American Society for Testing and Materials, trade associations, and manufacturers in allied industries. A meeting with the Quebec Master Roofers' Association of Canada resulted in making certified vermiculite concrete decks acceptable to receive the association's guaranteed roofing. Also attended was a meeting of the American Concrete Institute in Ottawa, at which 200 members were present.

The institute was deeply involved with the Portland Cement Association in testing a new regulated-set cement at the association's laboratories at Skokie, Ill., and in field-testing it under job conditions. Guest speaker Joseph H. Walker, PCA vice-president for research and development, said that the new product represents a major advance in concrete technology. "To all of us, this is an exciting new cement," he commented. "We believe it has a great future which you will share with us."

Regulated-set cement differs from regular portland cement in two very important and useful ways, Walker stated. First, it has a setting or a handling time that is controllable from a few minutes up to an hour or so. Secondly and of equal importance, regulated-set cement develops very high

early strength within an hour, and practically all the later aged properties investigated thus far are similar to regular portland cement.

Two major advantages of regulated-set cement are that lightweight vermiculite mixes have sufficient strength in one hour to be walked on. The vermiculite concrete gains maturity rapidly and is essentially independent of ambient temperature, so it is essentially unaffected by freezing conditions, Walker noted.

R. B. Moran, president of Texas Vermiculite Co., pointed out that regulated-set cement will eliminate marginal weather problems, such as rain and freezing, in placing vermiculite concrete roof decks. It will be the same kind of asset in the erection of vermiculite portland cement plaster panel or spandrel walls and cased, lathed columns, and could enable the vermiculite industry to double its present cement usage in two years, he predicted.
