The New and Essential Adhesive Ingredient

Heart of the "Monowall" system is Dow's new adhesive, "Threadline," which replaces conventional mortar and makes erection of a concrete block wall simple and fast, with resultant cost reduction. "Threadline," applied with a calking gun, creates a durable bond between the blocks, which are placed vertically.

Lou Weir, business manager of Local No. 2, Bricklayer's & Mason's Union, was enthusiastic about the results of the experimental use of the "Monowall" system and its future for application to home construction. He said use of the system could lead to far more employment for members of his union.

"Styrofoam" insulation is applied to the inner side of exterior walls, after which a s-inch coat of plaster is applied. On external wall surfaces, "Styrocrete" is applied by a spray method. Earl Ziegler, Dow Chemical's development manager of plastic construction materials, described "Styrocrete" as a latex product for modifying and toughening stucco to make it "totally resistant to freeze-thaw degradation."

"These buildings are fireproof, rat proof, termite-proof, vandal-proof," he said. "They are not 'temporary' in any sense of the word. A 40-year mortgage on them is perfectly valid, and we are sure these dwelling units still will be in use and good condition after that length of time."

Other companies that contributed materials or manpower to test innovations at Nagel Plaza are Detroit Edison Co., G. & W. H. Corson Co., of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., Marblehead Lime Co., Chicago; and Cooke Contracting Co., Midwest Asphalt Paving Co., Testing Engineers & Consultants, Hay-Con Tile Co., and Edward C. Levy Co., all of the Detroit area.

Bearing Wall Study

mal and acoustic insulation, and fire protection.

The exterior brick walls of the 174 ft. by 67 ft. building are 10-inch cavity type. The void is insulated with water-repellent vermiculite masonry fill, which doubles the insulation value and adds fire resistance. The bearing walls support 8-inch precast concrete planks topped with 1½" of concrete.

Party walls of the two apartments at each end are perpendicular to the long axis and act as preloaded shear walls. There are 100 efficiency and 94 one-bedroom units-18 on a typical floor.

This is a remarkably handsome structure and one which will age well. Projecting through the facade and accented by a darker color, the brick cross walls create a rhythmic vertical expression of the difference in occupancy sizes. Inside, the varying depth of the apartments was utilized to stagger the central corridor and reduce its apparent length.

On apartment interiors, the exposed masonry brick provides color, texture, and a maintenance-free surface. Careful site planning includes such amenities as lighted shuffle board courts and sculptured earth berms to conceal autos in the parking area. All the apartments were leased before construction began.

The general and masonry contractor was Muskegon Construction Co.
