The First National Bank North, Spokane, Washington, effectively illustrates that creative and imaginative thinking by the architect can make a Main Street U.S.A. location an attractive and desirable business address. Committed to a main street elevation, but faced with a typical goofed-up city alley, Architect Thomas R. Adkison, developed with judicious skill this site into a prestige business location.

The intriguing design turns the alley into a beautiful shopping mall with the intimate smooth flowing arch forms inviting the traffic flow from the mall into the bank. The brick and flue tile lanterns and the carved brick were done by Harold Balazs, artist-craftsman, and Drexel Adkison.

The logo of the First National Bank, pressed into the brick pavers, provides an attractive and eye catching identification. The adjoining plaza has pavers of the same clay body, but of a different size, thus giving a suitable distinction to that area not related to the bank.
