Glass Block Allows Interesting Design
Architectural glass block is used to break the monotony of solid pane glass windows in Rochester Savings Bank's new branch office in Irondequoit, N.Y. The Chiaro glass block panels surmounting expansive pane glass windows provide smooth, even, interior lighting and add an intriguing visual effect.

"Glass block is much more interesting than a solid glass curtain wall from floor to ceiling," Hugh Anderson, AIA. of Simonetti & Anderson, Rochester, explained. "The sunlight, the refraction of rays through the block, and the block glaze combine to create an extremely interesting effect."

Concrete Masonry Eases Rising Cost
Builders and developers are "discovering" concrete masonry products for home and apartment construction to ease rising materials costs and satisfy the requirements of more discerning consumers.

Concrete brick especially is becoming more and more popular because of its economy and decorative versatility. It can be used in its natural color, its surface can be painted, or, thanks to a new process, concrete bricks can be tinted a variety of pastel shades by introducing dyes in the concrete mix. Many producers have more than doubled out-put in recent years.

Ampress Introduces New Concept
A new concept of concrete product packaging has been introduced by Ampress Brick Co., Inc., Des Plaines, III. One of the major producers of concrete products in the Chicago area, Ampress now becomes the first company to ship all of its products in unitised packages through the use of steel strapping. These units can readily be unloaded by truck-mounted boom (see cut), and the contractor customer can handle them with his regular materials handling equipment. "Through in-plant savings," said Hale W. Olson, president. "Ampress is able to offer these labor-saving packages to purchasers at no additional cost."
