IMI Report...
The International Masonry Institute is now supported by cities from Canada to Florida, and from Long Island to Seattle, it has been announced by Donald R. Bidwell, IMI Chairman. In conjunction with BM&PIU President Thomas F. Murphy and MCAA President Allen Young, Bidwell disclosed that the West Palm Beach (Fla.) area is the latest to join IMI.
The BM&PIU and MCAA Presidents joined Bidwell in urging other cities, regions and states to include IMI in their next collective bargaining agreement or amend agreements in force to establish IMI support. IMI was established by BM&PIU and MCAA to promote the masonry industry.
Bidwell said that the West Palm Beach area is the first Florida city to complete negotiations and contribute to IMI. "It is also the first area in the United States and Canada to contribute more than the suggested one-cent an hour for each hour worked by BM&PIU members," he said. Jim Canavan, BM&PIU Local 6 business manager, reported that 1½¢ is being sent to IMI with another ½ going to a local sub-contractor promotion fund of the S.E. Bureau of Lathers & Plasterers.
Local 6, which covers six Florida counties, and the Trowel Guild, whose President is Jack Clerici, negotiated for the local and national promotion fund. Also involved were Charles Stringsteen, President of Local 6, Canavan, and Robert Anderson, Vice President of the Trowel Guild.
Guidance and materials needed to establish IMI support are available through Neal English, Executive Director, IMI, 823 Fifteenth St., N.W., Washington, D. C. 20005, telephone (202) 783-3908.
