Burien Public Library

Burien, Washington
Architect: Durham Anderson Freed Co.
General Contractor: George E. Hunt Co., Inc.
Mason Contractor: William L. Henson Co. (MCAA)

"The sculptured brick wall of the new Burien (Wash.) public library represents exceptional craftsmanship," according to the International Masonry Institute. Harold Balazs, a Spokane artist who was an AIA Craftsmanship Medal winner, designed it.

The contemporary, teal-brown brick structure was designed by the Seattle architectural firm, Durham Anderson Freed Company, Architects. Robert Durham, FAIA, is known to MCAA personnel as the former national president of the American Institute of Architects.

Some 38,000 brick and 100,000 pavers were laid by six masonry craftsmen of BM&PIU Local 2 working with the William L. Henson Company, the mason contractor. Deno Babboni served as foreman for the Henson Company and Larry Stenstrom as superintendent. IMI was told that while especially close attention had to be given to quality workmanship, it did not prove to be a complicated job for the mason contractor and union craftsmen. The building was well designed for masonry.

The library, which is located at 14700 Sixth St., S.W. in Burien, is one of four area center libraries in the King County Library System. Burien's new masonry structure houses comprehensive services and materials, extensive book, periodical and record collections, films, special reference sources and a large staff supervised by three professional librarians.
