Cement Shortage Aired
Bernard Richards, president of Alpha Portland Industries, Inc., New York City, discussed the worldwide cement shortage during a recent national news telecast. Richards blamed the U.S. cement shortage on an insufficient number of cement plants to meet production needs. He said that government price controls "make it unprofitable to build new facilities considering the enormous capital investment required." There is no foreseeable end to the cement shortage while controls exist, he said.

Architects Hope to Cure "Paneful" Job In Boston
There are pains and there are panes, and Boston is experiencing quite a bit of both.

A king-sized problem is centered there in the $135 million, 60-story headquarters tower of John Hancock Insurance Company. The company says it is going to replace all 10,348 of the 42-by-11-foot glass panes in the building's mirrolike surface. The cost is estimated at from $5 million to $7 million.

More than 3,500 of the insulated glass "lights" which form the reflective skin of the 790-foot structure have either been blown out by high winds or taken out because of cracking or other weaknesses. All have temporarily been replaced by plywood.

According to Hancock officials, the entire tower will be resurfaced with 12-inch-thick reflective tempered glass, which architects believe will solve the problem.
