Shannon who was named Chicago district sales manager. Dee Brown of Dee Brown Masonry, Dallas, has been elected chairman of the Texas Masonry Institute. The election took place upon the resignation of Vernon Emory. Elected to the board to replace Emory was Bob Fenimore, Jr., of Fenimore-Blythe, Fort Worth.

Norton Company's Construction Products Division, Worcester, Mass., has appointed Southern Construction Equipment Co., Charlotte, N.C., and Jahncke Service, Inc., New Orleans, La., distributors of Clipper brand construction products. Robert L. Beck has been elected to the newly created post of vice president and general counsel of National Gypsum Co., Buffalo, N.Y. Harrelson Equipment Co., Georgetown, S.C., has been appointed industrial and construction machinery distributor for Massey-Ferguson, Inc., Des Moines, Ia. Charles W. Reene has been named executive vice president, Washington affairs for the Portland Cement Association, Skokie, III.
Kaufman Agency Adds Three To PR Staff
Henry J. Kaufman & Associates, Inc., Washington's largest communications organization, has added three professionals to its public relations division staff.
Michael R. Codel has joined HJK&A as an account executive. For several years, he has served as advertising consultant to 25 Danish companies. Earlier, he was a management consultant for Business International in Geneva; associates editor of Business Europe magazine; and Associated Press staff correspondent and editor in the London Bureau.
Thomas K. Herron has joined HJK&A as an account executive. He has been executive director of the midwest region of the Brick Institute of America, located in Chicago, after earlier service with the national headquarters of BIA in McLean, Va., as assistant director of marketing/promotion.
Susan Leigh Smith has been appointed as a writer. She comes to HJK&A from the National Academy of Engineering, where she served in a similar capacity. She has written extensively on energy matters for the American Petroleum Institute and has written for a variety of labor publications. Ms. Smith is a graduate of The George Washington University.
Block Masonry Building Wins New York Award
Tracey Towers in The Bronx, New York City, presents an excellent example of the innovative working of block masonry construction. Completed this spring, the $33 million middle-income housing structure of 871 apartments was erected by Leon D. DeMatteis & Sons, Inc., Elmont, N.Y. Paul Rudolf was the architect, with masonry by Mercury Masonry Corp. (MCAA). The building was cited by the Concrete Industry Board of New York as the outstanding project of its type built in Greater New York City and environs.
Centex Awarded Contract
J. W. Bateson Company, Inc., Dallas, Texas, a wholly owned subsidiary of Centex Corporation, has been awarded a $59 million contract to construct Phase II of the Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles, company officials announced.
John A. Wacker, Bateson's chairman, said the award is the largest single contract ever received by the company.
