Construction has been completed on the largest year-round tennis facility in Oregon - a $1.4 million project in the core of a planned residential community known as Mountain Park in Lake Oswego, just south of Portland. Six indoor tennis courts with spectator seating, a four-court handball and squash playing area, and a central core comprised of locker and shower rooms, saunas, sun rooms, offices, pro-shop and nursery are included in the over-all plan. Four outdoor courts are also available for summer use.
The dominant architectural element of the building is a multi-sided roof system that arcs downward over each tennis court, incorporating Glu-lams and wood decking. The roof varies from 16 ft. in height to 34 ft. clear at the net line.
Advantage was taken of a sloping site in the wooded area of Mountain Park by cutting into the back corners and lowering the structure in. Bill Smith of the masonry firm of Smith Masonry Contractors, Inc. (MCAA) pointed out that the building was designed for giant thru-the-wall units making it possible to build a simple but beautiful masonry wall system.
The architects selected the 4x8x16 units because the dry-press brick stabilized the dimensions and the scale was compatible to the other basic materials used - primarily concrete piers and wood frame.
By utilizing this brick system, the architects noted, interior and exterior painting was kept to a minimum, with the color serving well as a background required in a tennis court and to back up the drop netting.
The entry patio of this Racquet Club affords an excellent view of the northern part of the Willamette Valley and the outside tennis courts. During the summer months this area is a popular spot for visitors and a gallery for the tennis matches.
