'76 MCAA Convention Report
"When It Rains It Pours"-A popular slogan which aptly applies to the weather in San Diego except they've added an additional phrase "When It Rains It Pours and Never, Ever Stops".
Mason Contractors from every section of the United States and Canada journeyed to San Diego to relax, play golf and tennis, and to conduct the business of the Association-but Old Mother Nature moved a major storm into the lower California area and many of the recreational and business activities were curtailed. The weather bureau called it the fourth rainest February in history and for the record it dropped 5.33 inches at the National Weather Service's Lindbergh Field monitoring station during the seven straight days of foul weather.
The weather however did not dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of those attending and each of the many and varied business sessions were well attended. The wide variety of subjects ably presented by the speakers included the economy, the National Labor Relations Board, load-bearing masonry construction, energy, all-weather construction and apprenticeship.
Starting off Convention Week at the Town and Country was the MCAA Estimating Seminar conducted by the Education Committee. Sixty-two persons participated in the day and a half course lectured by Jerry Pope of Greeley, Colorado. The second edition/revised of the manual Masonry Estimating For A Profit was introduced and received wide acclaim for its completeness and easy to read style.
Although Fun Day was scheduled for Friday the 6th most of the activities were cancelled because of the flooded conditions in the area. Those who did not golf or tennis joined the Tour of Tijuana.
Principal speakers at the Convention were: Mrs. Betty Southard Murphy, Chairman, NLRB; Carl L. Bradley, Chairman, AIA Energy Committee; John R. Mock, President, Hendrick & Mock and John Carlson, Vice President and Economist, Bank of America. Each received rousing rounds of applause following their presentations from the near capacity crowds in the huge convention center.
The first activities of the 26th Annual Convention got underway at 8:30 A.M. on Saturday morning when the Regional Vice Presidents held their individual conferences with Chapters and Members. This was followed at 10:15 A.M. by the meeting of the Executive Board. Each of the Officers, Regional Vice Presidents and Committee Chairmen presented their reports to the Executive Board.
