# Award Winning Structure
The Riverview Branch Office of the First National Bank of Toledo, designed by the Toledo architectural firm of Samborn, Steketee, Otis and Evans, Inc., has been selected as the winner of the first annual masonry awards program co-sponsored by the Toledo Chapter, American Institute of Architects, and the Masonry Institute of Northwestern Ohio. The bank, located on a small site on Jefferson Avenue in downtown Toledo, attracts attention with its 33-foot cylindrical brick stair tower and with brick laid in soldier courses above its glass facade.
"These were the key elements in the design which was executed entirely in masonry," said By West, AIA, a principal of Samborn, Steketee, Otis and Evans. "We used a sand mold brick because of its visual warmth and somewhat irregular shape."
Construction cost of the 10,000-square-foot building was $350,000. It was occupied in early 1970. Since this was the first competition of its type in northwestern Ohio, architects were permitted to go back to January 1, 1970, in submitting projects for consideration. A total of 15 buildings was entered.
