Arden Branch
Sacramento, California
Sometimes the design of a building goes beyond beauty and efficiency, and becomes a good story, as well. When Dreyfuss & Blackford, Sacramento architects, designed the new Arden Branch of the U.S. Post Office, they decided on a clean, low building surrounded by arches. A uniform, common face brick was chosen for its simplicity, its economy, and for its overall subtle attractiveness.
When it came time for construction, however, the situation became a little complicated. "We did a lot of structural arches," explained Perry O'Laughlin, project foreman for Townsend & Schmitt Masonry Contractors, "but these were unique. The arches required absolute uniformity of size and shape. This involved precision measurements not always needed in standard arches. But more important, look at the shape of those arches. They're not just a single radius like most arches. these are flattened at the top, so we had one tight radius at the corners, then a much larger radius to work with on top."
So seldom has this kind of work been specified in recent years, the contractors had to call upon a semi-retired journeyman to oversee the job. Said O'Laughlin, "None of the regulars have had much experience with this kind of design. In twelve years, I've never seen it. We had to fall back on the older guys."
To take full advantage of the unique opportunity, the "older guys" took the time to share their rare expertise with the others. Every apprentice was sent out at one time or another with the experienced journeyman for some on-the-job training. The project was a delight to work on, developing into an exciting educational experience for the masons, and of course, a beautiful new home for the U.S. Post Office in Sacramento.
