"Profitable Management for the Subcontractor" by Robert L. Teets, 320 pages, $16.50, McGraw-Hill Book Co., 1221 Avenue of the Americas, New York, N.Y. 10020.

This useful guide is written for the established subcontractor who wants to become even more successful, as well as for the inexperienced owner-manager who wishes to master the tools and techniques needed for the operation of an efficient and profitable business. It offers the reader a clear understanding of all business-related pitfalls which can lead to failure for the unwary subcontractor, and makes suggestions for avoiding or coping with these trouble spots.

Subjects such as accounting, labor relations, estimating, cash flow, finance, insurance, purchasing, negotiating, liens, and contracts are covered in simple language to give the non-business-oriented owner-manager a basic grasp of sound management principles. For future subcontractors, the book has especially useful coverage on marketing that will enable them to evaluate competitive firms as well as the market itself. Detailed sections on the latest practices and procedures in the field, including a unique method of paying off severed personnel with drafts and a simple technique for developing a fiscal budget and forecast, should also prove highly useful.

During his professional career, Robert Teets has held positions in practically every capacity of electrical contracting, from apprentice to management and owner. He has also served as estimator, engineer, purchasing agent, and executive vice-president where his responsibilities included accounting, cash management, marketing, and training.

"Concrete Products & Design Solve Site Problem for Apartments" by Portland Cement Association, 4 pages, 30¢ per copy, illustrated. PCA, Old Orchard Road, Skokie, III. 60076. Use code number SR167.01H.

How do you build a low-rise apartment project on a midtown site that's convenient but adjacent to the noise of a major highway and commuter railroad? The builder of The Courtyards in Arlington Hts., III., a Chicago suburb, used textured concrete masonry walls and precast concrete plank floors to offer residents security from fire and noise and to meet stringent code requirements.

The design and materials story of The Courtyards is detailed in a publication now available from the Portland Cement Association. Entitled "Concrete Products and Design Solve Site Problems for Apartment Projects," the illustrated brochure explains how concrete helped the developer achieve maximum usage of the 3.1 acre triangular site and provide tenants of the 99-unit complex with both convenience and privacy.
