Citizens of Longview, Wash., are justifiably proud of their new city hall completed in 1976. Designed with architecturally pleasing details in masonry, the walls feature several areas of corbelled brick, soldier courses and arched windows. This project required 88,000 face brick of standard and Norman dimensions in a reddish-brown color tone backed by sheetrock for insulation. The detailed brick work is intricate and unusual, as well as a tribute to the craftsmen who achieved the soft lines the architect desired.

The "chopped-off" look of many parapet walls was avoided by the use of corbelling, topped by three soldier courses of Norman brick. Two granite sculptured beaver plaques were removed from the front of the old city hall and were placed in the brick walls at the entrances.

The arched windows span both the first and second floors of the building. The arches will also tie in with the arched windows of the adjacent library building. The landscaping detail includes a built-up earth berm so onlookers see the shrubbery and flowers rather than cars in the parking lot.

Brick columns support the root system of a drive-in pay station outside the Longview City Hall. City charges such as utility bills and other assessments may be paid here.
