UTAH'S GOLDEN TROWEL AWARDS
Utah is a state which abounds with outstanding masonry structures. In recognition of new additions to this rich masonry heritage, and as a means to further heighten public awareness of the many advantages of masonry construction, the Utah Masonry Research and Promotion (UMR&P) Association has presented its "Golden Trowel" awards for 1976.
Awards were made to the architects, engineers, owners, general contractors involved in the recent construction of several outstanding structures in the state. The awards produced considerable publicity for the recipients and the association.
The Union 11th Ward building of the Latter-Day Saints Church was chosen for the excellence in the block award.
The excellence in brick award went to the Bell Telephone Company's Main ESS Equipment Building in Provo. A slump block home in Salt Lake City captured the honors in the residential category.
Special merit awards were given for the Bishops Storehouse (Later Day Saints Church) and the Jordan High School. A special award for masonry restoration was made for work on the historic Salt Lake City & County Building, the sandstone facade of which had been damaged by air pollution and freezing action.
The outstanding masonry contractor award was presented to Hiram Smith and Orval Rice of Harv & Higham Masonry. Cited as outstanding journeyman mason was Donald Morgensen. Don LaRose was chosen as outstanding mason tender.
A special distinguished service award was given to Dell Hofheins of Western States Masonry for his many contributions to the masonry industry and the community.
The awards were presented during the annual "Masonry In Utah Week" proclaimed by the Governor of Utah. More than 100 construction industry officials attended the awards banquet.

A Special Award for Excellence in Masonry Restoration was presented to the Salt Lake City and County Building. Architect, Burtch W. Beall, Jr.; Structural Engineer, Edmund W. Allen; General and Mason Contractor, Hallmark Constructors.
