THOMSON COURT
Markham, Ontario
Architect: Sievenpiper
Structural Engineer: James F. MacLaren
General Contractor: West York Construction
Mason Contractor: Village Contracting
Unit Masonry Producers: Brampton Brick Ltd., General Concrete Canada Ltd.
Jury Comment: The jury greatly enjoyed visiting Thomson Court, a home for the elderly. Using the ravine site with skill and intelligence, the architect has angled his building to provide visual interest, make full use of the site, and provide the occupants with a sunny outlook.
Careful massing of escape stairs at the end of the block gives the building a vigorous expression well-suited to brickwork. The simple detailing of the elevations was very well handled. In particular, the exposed slab at the balcony and the open, painted steel balustrade contrast nicely with the general massing and the soldier course of brick at floor level.
The range of brick used, while effective from a distance, gives the exterior walls a rather spotty appearance close up. The entrance canopy also seems a little unsettled in contrast to an otherwise excellent building which was a serious contender for the Award of Excellence.
Indiana Architectural Student Grant
The Masonry Institute of Central Indiana has presented its third annual masonry scholarship of $1,000 to Ball State University's Architectural & Planning School. This year's scholarship recipient is Ms. Julie Monk, a fifth year student. Shown presenting Ms. Monk with a check is William E. LeFeber, executive director of the Institute. At the left are Charles M. Sappenfield, dean, and Kenneth Carpenter, chairman of the School of Architecture & Planning. The intent of the scholarship is to have the student study masonry construction with architects, owners, builders and manufacturers through travel and research.
