Charles Miyata Elected
Chairman of MIH
Charles A. Miyata, president of the Honolulu-based firm of Masonry, Inc., has been elected chairman of the Masonry Institute of Hawaii.
For the past ten years Miyata has been MCAA Hawaii state chairman. His mason contracting firm, which he founded in 1962, specializes in commercial and industrial masonry buildings.
PDCA's Torrence Retires
Ed Torrence, prominent association executive and elder statesman of the Painting & Decorating Contractors Association of America, recently announced his retirement and was honored at a banquet attended by hundreds of persons in Portland, Ore.
A native of Oregon, Torrence formerly served as executive director of PDCA and was field representative of the Southwest Washington and Oregon Painting Industry Advancement Fund at the time of his retirement.

Ohio mason contractor Sherman R. Smoot has been named "Alumnus of the Year" at West Virginia State College. President of the Sherman R. Smoot Co. (MCAA), he studied bricklaying at West Virginia Collegiate Institute, forerunner of WVSC. Smoot was formally honored during homecoming weekend of October 7-8. The appointment of Clarence J. Miller as credit manager has been announced by Koehring Finance Corp. KFC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Koehring Co., Milwaukee, Wis. Albert H. Vitters has been appointed continued on page 21.
"Masonry" Cover Presented to Architects
The administrative headquarters of the Automobile Club of Michigan in Dearborn was featured on the cover of the October, 1977 issue of "Masonry." A plaque of the cover was presented last month to the project's architect, Giffels Associates, Inc., of Southfield, Mich. Shown accepting the plaque for Giffels are Victor F. Leabu, P.E. (left), vice president of design services, and James R. Graham, AIA (2nd from left), director of architectural development. Making the presentation are MCAA President Robert F. Ebeling (2nd from right) and John W. Hart (far right), president of the Detroit Mason Contractors Association. The AAA building, which features round perimeter towers of reinforced concrete masonry, earned Giffels Associates an "M Award for excellence in masonry design in 1975.

Sponsors Radio Show
The Masonry Institute of Washington, Seattle, is promoting the use of masonry products in construction through a unique sports program on a network of radio stations across the state.
Produced by Cinema Associates, Inc. of Seattle, the MIW-sponsored sports show is aired five days a week on 15 radio stations. Each station receives the tape-recorded programs free of charge in exchange for airing one commercial message from the Masonry Institute. MIW is not charged for the commercial air time but is paying the costs of producing the show.
New Dayton MCA Officers
In its annual election of officers held in November, the Mason Contractors Association of Dayton elected Richard Matthews of KMCO, Inc. as president for his fifth term in that office. Other officers elected were:
William Anderson of Anderson-Hester, Inc., vice president: Robert Baker of Fryman-Kuck, secretary, and Harold Krabacher of KMCO, Inc., treasurer, his fourth term.
