Masonry Design Course Offered at LIT
First session of the new class in structural masonry design at the School of Architecture, Lawrence Institute of Technology. The instructor is W. Thomas Munsell, P.E.
Thanks in large part to the efforts of the Masonry Institute of Michigan, a course in structural masonry design is now being offered by the School of Architecture at Lawrence Institute of Technology, Southfield, Mich. LIT thus becomes one of just a few colleges in the nation to offer such a class. Its School of Architecture is the nation's largest in terms of undergraduate enrollment.
The four-credit course is designed for senior-level students. It is also open to practicing architects, structural engineers and construction industry professionals interested in learning the latest theories in masonry design. In addition to structural design, the course covers properties of masonry materials.
"Our office proposed the class and played a major role in its development," said John A. Heslip, executive director of the Masonry Institute. "It was the next logical step in our long and continuing relationship with LIT's School of Architecture."
The Masonry Institute also sponsors a biennial design competition and funds two annual scholarships for LIT architectural students. Masonry Institute personnel serve as visiting lecturers at the school.
The masonry design class is being taught by W. Thomas Munsell, P.E., who recently joined the LIT faculty after five years as structural engineer for the Masonry Institute. In the latter position, he worked on development of the design course.

The owner of a financially troubled business went to the president of his local bank and asked for a $100,000 loan. "That's a lot of money," the president remarked. "Can you give me a statement?" "Yes," answered the businessman. "I'm optimistic."
