Perlite Loose-Fill
Insulation Leads Gainers
From 1976 to 1977, the latest year for which U.S. Bureau of Mines Reports are available, expanded perlite used in the U.S. jumped 15% from 432,000 to 498,000 tons. This is the second consecutive year that record production of expanded perlite was achieved.
"Most of this big jump may be attributed to the continually increasing demand for high performance perlite insulation for energy conservation in building construction," said Robert Milanese, manager director of the Perlite Institute, New York. N.Y. "All building products utilizing expanded perlite recorded gains in 1977."
New Quarters for MIM
The Masonry Institute of Michigan has moved into new and larger quarters in a two-story, brick-and-block building in Farmington, Mich. Located at Drake Rd. and Grand River Ave., the building is easily accessible from the 1-96, 1-696, and 1-275 Freeways.
John A. Heslip, executive director, noted that the Institute's service area (all of Michigan plus 19 counties in northwestern Ohio) dictated a continued location in the 1-96 corridor. "We're 40 minutes from downtown Detroit, an hour from Lansing and an hour from Toledo," he said. "For our purposes, that's as centrally located as we can get."
The new address and phone number are: 24155 Drake Rd. S-202, Farmington, MI 48024, (313) 478-6455.
Canada's Gov. General
Welcomed at Trade Fair
Canada's Governor General Schreyer and Mrs. Schreyer enjoyed a warm and friendly welcome during their visit to the Atlantic Trowel Trades Fair, held recently in Saint John, N.B. The fair is the Canadian masonry industry's major promotional event.
Gov. Gen. Schreyer officially opened the fair, then donned coveralls, took up the trowel, and joined in a spirited bricklaying contest against Thomas F. Murphy, retiring president of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen, Washington. D.C.
That evening, Mr. and Mrs. Schreyer viewed with considerable interest the examples of masonry skill which were demonstrated in the more than 50 elaborate exhibits in the arena.
