Jury's comment: "An outstanding urban solution for a very large building occupying a total block. The entry is an excellent example of governmental architecture."


Household Finance Corporation Headquarters, Mt. Prospect, III.

Jury's comment: "Extremely well disciplined for a large building, well organized in design and materials, and carefully detailed."


Square D International Building, Palatine, III.

Jury's comment: "A well scaled building with a good plan and a pleasant environment in which to work."


Five Architectural Firms Honored in Chicago

Five architectural firms were honored for outstanding masonry design from 67 entries submitted in the sixth annual Exellence In Masonry Architectural Awards Presentations sponsored by the Metropolitan Chicago Masonry Council. More than 600 persons attended the annual banquet and dance held recently in the Rosemont Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency O'Hare.

For the first time since the inception of the program, two structures were found worthy of Gold Medal Awards:

David's Plaza, Chicago, III.; Booth, Nagle & Hartray/Ltd., architect, with Nick Vinci & Sons, Inc. the mason contractor.

Fort Dearborn Postal Station, Chicago; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, architect, with Best Masonry. Inc. the mason contractor.

The awards were presented by Eugene George, president of the International Masonry Institute and immediate past president of MCAA, and Gertrude Lempp Kerbis, FAIA, president of the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Silver Medal Awards were given to:

Household Finance Corporation Headquarters, Mt. Prospect, III.; Loebl, Scholssman & Hackl, architect, with Crouch-Walker Corp. the mason contractor.

North Park Village Health Center, Chicago; Bureau of Architecture, City of Chicago, architect, with Esche & Lee, Inc. the mason contractor.

Jury's comment: "Good, simple, orderly design. Elevations are simple and become part of the surrounding residential neighborhood, which provides a pleasant environment for the patients."

Three dignitaries from the masonry industry made the presentations: John T. Joyce, president, International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen; Sherwood Patek, vice chairman, Brick Institute of America, and Walter Galanty, Jr., executive director, National Association of Brick Distributors.
