This handsome 60,000 square foot, $4,736,000 addition to Downtown Plaza of Vallejo, Calif., houses all city departments, except fire and police. The remaining buildings (post office and public library) in the civic-oriented complex are both of similar design-steel frame and concrete veneered with brick.

During the design stage the city considered using only concrete. The cost of each of the two types of building finishes was studied, and the final decision was made to use brick veneer. The reason given was that the improved appearance and low maintenance more than offset the nominal extra cost.

One interesting extra benefit has been an increase in efficiency and an improvement in general attitude of the employees in their new surroundings, according to city officials.
