The Ohio Masonry Council, in co-operation with the Architects Society of Ohio, recently announced the winners of their "Excellence In Masonry-1980" competition.

The co-chairmen of this annual event were James R. Platt, Mid-East Region executive director, Brick Institute of America, and Stevans A. Manyo, executive director, Northeastern Ohio Masonry Institute.

Final selection of the four top awards was announced by John Holabird, FAIA, chairman of the jury which included members of the American Institute of Architects and a leading mason contractor, all from the Chicago area.

Attending the presentation ceremony, in addition to members of the Architects Society, were members of the Ohio Masonry Council, which includes the Brick Institute of America, Mid-East Region; the Cincinnati Unit Masonry Association: Masonry Institute of Dayton: Northeastern Ohio Masonry Institute: National Association of Brick Distributors, Northeastern Ohio Chapter, and the Northwestern Ohio Masonry Institute.

Four prize-winning entries were selected as exemplifying true excellence in masonry design and craftsmanship. Two of the awards were won by the architectural firm of Levin, Porter, Smith of Dayton. The firm was honored for its design of the Regional Transit Authority building in Dayton and improvement projects on the campus of Wright State University in Dayton.

The RTA building was judged as outstanding not only for its aesthetic qualities but as an excellent example of how the use of masonry can reduce building maintenance costs, improve security and conserve energy.
