VICA Honors Roark
Bill Roark, director of manpower development for the Brick Institute of America, was recently singled out for special recognition by the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA), which dedicated its 16th National Leadership Conference to Roark.
Roark was honored for his leadership in opening the doors to organized labor, and for supporting the development of hundreds of bricklaying programs in schools across the country.
Social Security Rates Go Up Jan. 1
The withholding tax rates for Social Security (FICA) went up to 6.65% each for employees and employers, for a total of 13.3%, effective January 1, 1981. New requirements for depositing withheld income also went into effect. The amount of taxes determines the frequency of deposits. Make sure you secure and read IRS Notice 579 dated November, 1980 for complete details.
Joseph Clifford Honored by MCA of N.W. Indiana
During the annual Christmas party of the Mason Contractors Association of Northwestern Indiana, held Saturday evening, December 6, in Merrillville, members of the group honored Joseph Clifford for 25 years of continuous service to that organization and to the Masonry industry.
Clifford was presented an engraved pocket watch by the membership and a plaque citing his meritorious efforts by the Mason Contractors Association of America. The plaque was presented by MCAA executive vice president George A. Miller, who represented Louis J. Helbert, Jr., MCAA president. Clifford is now serving in a repeat term as president of the MCA of Northwestern Indiana.
Koehring Co. Reports 3rd Quarter Gains
Koehring Co., Milwaukee, Wis., has reported net earnings of $4,036,000, or $1.21 per common share, on shipments of $116,117,000 for the fiscal quarter ended August 31, 1980.
This compared with net earnings of $3,887,000, or $1.17 per common share, on shipments of $128.656.000 in the like quarter last year.
Kentuckiana Institute Starts Awards Program
The Kentuckiana Masonry Institute, Louisville, Ky., in cooperation with the Masonry Industry Council, has announced its first masonry design awards program for architectural projects completed since January 1, 1977.
To qualify for entry, buildings must use masonry as the primary interior and exterior material or the architect must show that masonry was important in the solution of the design problem. The awards will be presented in March, 1981.
Japan Links Up with China on Forklifts
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. recently concluded an all-inclusive technical tie-up agreement with the Beijing City Forklift Plant for production of small-size forklifts.
Under the agreement, MHI will render assistance in improving the existing plant facilities and training Chinese engineers in production and quality control. This marks the first case in which the Japanese forklift industry has provided such a broad range of technical cooperation to China.
