Writer Square-A Unique Addition To Downtown Denver

Denver's downtown renewal program received a big boost recently with the completion of Writer Square, an attention-getting building complex occupying a full city block. The $16 million mixed-use facility includes town- houses, offices, condominiums and retail shops in addi- tion to two levels of underground parking.

The architectural design, which has been applauded by the Colorado Masonry Institute as "outstanding," incorporates a blend of turn-of-the century motifs with some modern touches and was the work of Barker/Rinker/Seacat, Architects, Inc.

Brick masonry and ornamental wrought iron are the chief design elements. A pleasing plaza/walkway, reminiscent of many European cities, winds through the square, focusing on a clock tower (actually a clever way of concealing the ventilation shaft for the project's under- ground garage). Antique street lamps add a nostalgic flavor.

The ground level includes 50,000 sq. ft. of retail space, fronting on the pedestrian walkways, including the "inner street" which offers an intimate space that shields walkers from some of the stark new highrise buildings in the area but still allows plenty of daylight penetration.
