IMI Contributes to
Engineering Education
The International Masonry Institute's continuing efforts to add to the knowledge of masonry among building design professionals will soon yield two new educational "modules" for use by engineering school faculty. A "Material Science Module" and an "Engineering Laboratory Module" are expected to be available to schools throughout the United States and Canada this spring.
The two modules are organized so that students exposed to the first will receive a fundamental understanding of masonry as a basic building material types of mortars and grouts, kinds of masonry units, and the general physical properties of masonry.
The second module focuses in more detail on the composite behavior of masonry units and mortar materials, and demonstrates through laboratory testing that masonry can be rationally engineered in the same sense as steel, concrete and wood.
