CONFERENCE REPORT
continued from page 28

"Passive Solar Energy" was covered by Mario Catani, director of PCA's Building Division, and Alan Yorkdale, vice president of engineering and research of BIA.

Catani explained that code compliance and energy conservation have been the two main thrusts of PCA's research over the past four years. In passive solar heating, he said, the system utilizes the structural features of the building to store heat and release it when needed at a later time. This is opposed to "active" systems in which the thermal flow is by forced means, such as collectors, fans and pumps. The latter is not very cost-effective in the United States and Canada, he said.

Showing color slides of practical applications of solar homes in various regions of the country, Catani illustrated masonry's desirable features, such as the Trombe wall thermal storage system and the direct gain system using sunlight to heat brick walls and floors.

Alan Yorkdale also gave a slide presentation, in which he pointed out that some passive solar home designs incorporate up to 45 percent more masonry than in conventionally designed homes with brick veneer. His illustrations showed one Trombe wall that had 16 inches of brick and concrete block in it, indicating the vast potential for masonry in the growing passive solar field.

The last business session of the day was the MCAA Annual Meeting at 1:30 p.m., at which President Louis J. Helbert, Jr. presided. Reports of Association officers and committee chairmen were presented and the annual election of officers was held. Dino Maniago, president of Acme Masonry Ltd., Burnaby, B.C., Canada, was elected vice president for Region J. succeeding William J. Young. All other officers were reelected to a second term.

That evening, at 6:30 p.m., the MCAA Reception was held in the Grand Salon of the MGM, immediately preceding MCAA's 31st Annual Banquet and Dance in the Grand Ballroom. As in past years, George A. Miller, MCAA executive vice president, acted as banquet toastmaster and assisted in the installation of Association officers. The banquet officially closed the formal activities associated with MCAA's '81 International Masonry Conference and Trade Show.

MCAA, its officers and members gratefully acknowledge the generous gesture of the Brick Institute of America and the National Concrete Masonry Association, who acted as hosts at the Reception.

NOTE: The preceding report constitutes the Secretary's minutes of the 1981 MCAA International Masonry Conference. A copy of the minutes is on file at the MCAA Executive Office and may be reviewed by interested members of the Association.
