Entries in the 1981 awards program were submitted by members of the Toledo AIA Chapter, then judged by a panel of architects from Louisville, Ky. The jury chairman, Garnet Hoffmann, AIA, of McCullough Associates, Louisville, attended the banquet and announced the awards. His fellow jurors, all from Louisville, were John H. Bickel III, FAIA, of Bickel-Gibson Associates: David Lee, AIA. University of Louisville, and Lawrence J. Leis, AIA, of Louis & Henry Architects.
The awards were presented by Frank Comte, chairman of the Masonry Institute, and John L. Marlais, AIA, president of the Toledo AIA Chapter.
Featured speaker was Louis G. Redstone, FAIA, chairman of Louis G. Redstone & Associates, Inc., Livonia, Mich., who discussed public art and the use of masonry as an art form.

The addition to Wesley United Methodist Church in Fostoria was completed in December, 1980. It is of masonry bearing-wall design-the masonry walls support the building as well as providing its facade. The walls are of brick, both inside and out. One triangular wall features a dramatic circular window. The interior of the building carries through the masonry design with arched brick cross walls, circular brick planters and brick paving units. Laminated roof trusses range in length up to 76 ft. and are stepped to create sloped clerestory windows. The lobby which links the addition to the existing building utilizes south-facing glass in a saw-tooth arrangement-a passive solar, energy-conserving design. Cost of the 8,400 sq. ft. single-story addition was $600,000.
