Special Recognition Awards were presented to Robert F. Ebeling and Eugene George. Ebeling was chairman of the International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust (IMAT) from 1975-81, and George was 1979-81 chairman of the International Masonry Institute (IMI). Ebeling and George were cited for "outstanding leadership and devotion to the masonry industry." Louis J. Helbert, Jr., 1980-81 MCAA president, presented the photographically illustrated plaques. Participating in the ceremony at the Opening Session of the Conference were L. Gerald Carlisle, executive vice president of the International Bricklayers Union; Bruce N. Voss, executive director, IMI Apprenticeship & Training Program, and Ray Lackey, IMI executive director.
MCAA members were invited to participate in discussions and provide their input. The day's business was concluded with an MCAA Executive Board meeting at 4:00 p.m.
The following day, Sunday, was not exactly a day of rest. An Industry Promotion meeting was conducted beginning at 10:00 a.m. under the direction of Ray Lackey, executive director, International Masonry Institute, Washington, D.C., and Bill Pautler, executive director, Masonry Institute of St. Louis.
Seven speakers made brief oral and slide presentations on diverse subjects bearing on the masonry industry: James E. Amrhein, Masonry Institute of America, "Research on Taller and Thinner Masonry Walls"; Norbert J. Hynek, Masonry Institute of Wisconsin, "Promoting Masonry with Passive Solar"; Howard Noziska, Minnesota Masonry Institute, "Co-op Promotion Programs with Supplier/Manufacturer Associations"; Morgan K. Fields, Masonry Institute of Memphis, "Effective Direct Mailing to Decision Makers"; Paul LaVene, Oklahoma Masonry Institute, "Brick Sculpture-Architectural Visual Presentations"; Colin Munro, Illinois Masonry Institute, "Successful Architectural Awards Programs-A Result of Effective Jury Selection", and J. Gregg Borchelt, Masonry Institute of Houston/Galveston, "National Masonry Code-An Update."
Lackey and Borchelt additionally made a brief report on the "Houston Masonry Market Survey and Its Application for Other Markets."
The Industry Promotion meeting wound up at 1:00 p.m., allowing enough time for a quick lunch and a wardrobe change to attend the 2:00 p.m. President's Reception. This traditional hour-long social break had the MCAA officers and their wives form a reception line to welcome members and their spouses to the '82 Conference. Immediately afterward was the official opening of the '82 MCAA Educational Trade Show. To the familiar tune "As the Saints Go Marching In," a spirited Dixieland band led the Show visitors Pied Piper style from the reception to the Hyatt Convention Center to await the formal ribbon-cutting by President Louis J. Helbert, Jr. and entry to the Show, which ran for three days, concluding on Tuesday.
The Opening Session of the '82 MCAA International Masonry Conference was officially called to order at 9:45 a.m., Monday, February 15, by President Helbert. Preceding the scheduled speakers were the hallmarks of MCAA Conferences the presentation of colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the invocation.
