Third Architectural Awards Program
Presented by Ohio Masonry Council

The Ohio Masonry Council, in conjunction with the Architects Society of Ohio, recently presented its third annual Excellence In Masonry Architectural Awards Program at the Quaker Square Hilton Hotel in Akron.

Judging for the program was conducted in Pittsburgh, Pa., by a panel of architects composed of jury chairman Sylvester Damianos, AIA, of Damianos & Associates: Fritz Sippel, AIA, Deeter-Richey-Sippel Associates, and James D. Brown, AIA, James D. Brown Associates.

Excellence Awards were presented to five architectural firms: Levin, Porter & Smith, Inc., for the Dayton Area Board of Realtors Building, Dayton (see cover story); Robert C. Gaede Architects, Inc., for the Fleet Branch Library, Cleveland: A. M. Kinney Associates, William A. Rabon and A. M. Kinney, Inc., Architects & Engineers, for the Toyota Regional Office and Parts Depot, Cincinnati: Tufts & Wenzel, Architects, Inc., for the Harvest Publishing Co. Corporate Headquarters, Middleburg Heights, and PDT + Co., Architects/Planners, for the Community of the Good Shepherd Church, Cincinnati.

Three Honorable Mention Awards were given to: Levin, Porter & Smith, Inc., for the Frederick A. White Center for Ambulatory Care, Wright State University, Dayton; Whitley-Whitley, for the Regional Transit Authority Electrical Substation, Cleveland, and PDT Co., Architects/Planners, for the Taft Broadcasting Facility, Cincinnati.

Making the presentations were: MCAA regional vice president Richard C. Matthews, Masonry Institute of Dayton: Stevans A. Manyo, Northeastern Ohio Masonry Institute; James Platt, Brick Institute of America, Mid-East Region; Tim Gilday, Unit Masonry Association of Cincinnati, and Richard Derr, National Association of Brick Dealers.

Maescher & Co., Inc. Mason contractor: Pyramid Masonry Contractors, Inc. Jury comments: "Bold and very well proportioned forms... dignified... sensitive detailing."

Fleet Branch Library-Architect: Robert C. Gaede, Architects, Inc. General and mason contractor: Jance & Co., Inc. Jury comments: "Strong forms, juxtaposed well orderly plan.. straightforward."

Harvest Publishing Co. Corporate Headquarters-Architect: Tufts & Wenzel, Architects Incorporated. General contractor: APM Co. Mason contractor: R. P. Carbone Co. Jury comments: "A neat statement with soft siting... excellent scale... takes advantage of the flexible quality of brick."

Community of the Good Shepherd Church-Architect: PDT + Co., Architects/Planners, Cincinnati. General contractor: Frank Messer & Sons Construction Co. Mason contractor: Mostow Masonry Contractors. Jury comments: "Nice massing of elements warm interiors of masonry... well integrated interior/exterior expression."
