his old friends and chat about the days when he was associated with the Cleveland MCA.

One of the largest delegations to attend the Conference was the Illinois contingent from Cook and DuPage Counties in the Chicago area. One of their own, Tony Luczynski, chairman of MCAA's Material Handling Committee, moderated the highly successful outdoor Masonry Industry Showcase material handling equipment demonstration at the Conference. He was ably assisted by Safety Committee chairman Don Grant and members of both committees.

Climatologists can assist you with a wide range of business activities. If you plan to build a new facility, for example, you might want to situate the buildings to catch cool breezes in the summer but avoid winter winds. A climatologist might prevent you from automatically opting for south-facing windows to generate passive solar energy if winds or cloud cover would make another angle more profitable. These specialists can help you utilize winds to cut your snow removal bills.

Construction planners need climatic data to schedule excavation and concrete pouring and to avoid thaws that might turn the building site into a quagmire. Business should anticipate the conditions of roads, waterways, air routes and warehouses. The incidence of fog is also important to a business that relies on air shipping. Climate should always be considered in designing products that will be used outdoors. Jim Steinhart. Executive, July, 1982.

And it was difficult not to notice the impressive arch that was formed by the highlift fork trucks that were parked in the Showcase area at the Town & Country (see cover). Nearly everyone who walked past them could be seen looking up to the tops of the masts and booms, some reaching up to 45 ft. A truly impressive sight that signaled to everybody that MCAA was there!

Mention My Name In Milwaukee

There are surprises and then there are surprises, and MCAA secretary Jerry Dufour got the surprise of his life on his birthday this past March 12th. While attending the Marquette-Southwestern Louisiana college basketball game at the Mecca Arena in Milwaukee before a sell-out crowd of 12,000-he was flabbergasted at halftime when the five Marquette cheer-leaders displayed signs that read:

It's Sad/For A Girl/To Have/Reached/An Age
Where The Men/Consider/Her/Charmless!
But It's/Worse For/A Man To Have Reached/An Age
Where/The Girls/Consider/Him/Harmless!
Happy/Birthday/Jerry/Dufour

"Harmless" Jerry was 52 years old that day. The creative gentleman who arranged the whole scene was Bill Dentinger, MCAA vice president and one of Dufour's best friends (they're both from the Milwaukee area). They were joined at the birthday celebration by Mr. & Mrs. Paul Clements (Paul is a former MCAA regional vice president) who journeyed up from Louisville, Ky., to attend the "historic" event.

Think Climate Instead of Weather

Executives often overlook the importance of an area's climate in new constructions and business ventures. Although information is often available free of charge from federal, regional and university bureaus or from private consulting agencies for a fee-many a project has failed because the planner neglected to ask the right questions. To understand the importance of climate, you must first distinguish it from weather. Weather is the rain, sun, heat, cold, or wind that occurs at a particular time. Climate is the long-term average of weather phenomena in a geographical area. Asking for weather data when you want information on climate will get you the wrong office.
