BIA Spotlights
Reinforced Brick Panels

The Brick Institute of America has published a Case Study highlighting reinforced brick masonry panels.

The study takes a close look at Delta Air Lines' office building in Atlanta and focuses on all facets of the building's construction. Topics include planning and development, architectural and structural design, quality control, construction, and economics.

For a copy, contact Charles N. Farley at BIA, 1750 Old Meadow Rd., McLean, VA 22102.

Sludge Bonds Brick
Better, Says Professor

A Purdue University civil engineering professor says getting rid of sewer sludge is an expensive, controversial problem, and a good solution would be to use that sludge to make brick.

According to Prof. James Alleman, using 30% sludge instead of clay or shale actually produces brick that are superior in bonding to mortar. They don't look or smell any different from regular brick, he says, because the sludge contains mostly dead cells of bacteria that digested the original raw sewage.

"The problem isn't technology but public relations," Alleman says. So far, he hasn't found anyone willing to use his manufacturing method.

Va. Mason Contractor
Chosen for Restoration

Snow Jr. & King of Norfolk, Va., has been selected by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation as the masonry firm to provide reconstruction work on historic Public Hospital in Williamsburg, Va.

A deciding factor was the sample panel of 18th century style masonry Snow Jr. & King presented in its bid. The masonry work, as all Williamsburg restoration, will be authentic to the pre-Revolutionary War period.

Original construction of the hospital was authorized by the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1770 as America's first mental hospital. Its rectangular structure measures 100' x 32' and will serve as the entrance to the new DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery. The two will connect at basement level by a 65' underground gallery. A 12' high brick facade to conceal the modern museum will give the appearance of an 18th century garden wall.

Combined cost of the Public Hospital and Decorative Arts Gallery is estimated at $14.9 million. Completion is set for mid-1984.

New Glazed Tile Meets
Seismic Requirements

A new vertically cored structural glazed facing tile (SGFT) for natural hazard areas (seismic) has been introduced by Stark Ceramics, Inc., Canton, Ohio.

Available in 4", 6" and 8" bed depths with an 8" x 16" ceramic glazed face, the new seismic tile provides the durability, ease-of-maintenance, and fire protection of a conventional SGFT wall and adds vertical coring to allow for vertical reinforcement.

The tile can be laid in either running or stack bond which will provide continuous vertical core areas into which reinforcing rods and concrete grout can be inserted. Normal spacing is 4' on center, but the tile allows as close as 8" on center reinforcing.

Round or square corner shapes are also included in the new system. Colors offered include eight mats, specks and mottles to suit any application requiring the permanent ceramic surface of SGFT.

The Stark seismic tile is manufactured to ASTM C-126 and has a guaranteed minimum compressive strength of over 2500 psi.

Housing Industry Study

The Harvard-MIT Joint Center for Urban Studies has launched a major research effort aimed at understanding the basic forces that are shaping the American housing industry.

During the next three years, the "Housing Futures Study" will attempt to identify emerging trends in housing consumption and demand, and translate the resulting data into information that government and private industry can use in determining housing policy and setting future goals.

The Joint Center's 20-year history of leadership in housing research is supported by funds from about 50 firms involved in the housing industry.
