North Carolina Brick
Sales Rise Again

For the second year in a row, the sale of brick in North Carolina has increased over the previous year. According to the Brick Association of North Carolina, brick shipments for the first four months of 1984 have risen by 26% over the same 1983 period.

"This is a healthy increase indeed," said BANC general manager Marion R. Cochran. "But what is really incredible is that if you compare this year's shipments with those of 1982, you will see an increase of a whopping 60%. That's quite a comeback."

Construction Contracts
At Near Record Level

Continuing strength in housing and a surge of public works projects sustained February's construction contracting rate at January's near-record level, despite a setback in commercial and industrial building.

According to McGraw-Hill's F. W. Dodge Division, newly started construction of all kinds in February totaled $14.2 billion. "There's still plenty of life in the building market's recovery," said George A. Christie, chief economist for Dodge.
