The Masonry Council advises and consults with the Masonry Research Foundation Board of Directors on the research needs of the masonry industry.
The Council helps prepare requests for proposals, evaluates and recommends research projects for support and funding. The Council also monitors the projects. Current projects include a study on bond of brick and mortar at Clemson University in South Carolina and a brick-and-block composite wall study at the University of Florida.
Preparation of an annotated bibliography of masonry research performed since 1860 has just been completed by the Centre for Research & Development at Calgary, Alberta.
The Council's new chairman, William Lefkofsky, is a professional engineer registered in 15 states. He received a degree in civil engineering from Wayne University and a law degree from Detroit College of Law. He has been a lecturer at Lawrence Institute of Technology and a director of the Concrete Products Guild of Michigan. He has participated in numerous seminars on structural design and construction.
Mario J. Catani, the Council's new vice chairman, holds a master's degree in civil engineering from Newark (N.J.) College of Engineering and is chairman of the joint ASCE/ACI Committee 530 on Masonry Structures. Prior to joining Dur-O-Wal in 1982, he was director of the Buildings Division of Portlant Cement Association.
John T. Joyce, president of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen, was re-elected president of the Masonry Research Foundation at its recent annual meeting with the MRF Advisory council in Pine Isle, Ga.
The Foundation's vice president is Paul Lenchuk, president, National Concrete Masonry Association; treasurer is John P. Gleason, president, Brick Institute of America, and the secretary is George A. Miller, executive vice president, Mason Contractors Association of America.

Named to AFL-CIO Post
John T. Joyce, president of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen, has been named to the AFL-CIO Executive Council. Joyce has been president of the Bricklayers Union since November, 1979, having previously served on the union's Executive Board for 13 years, first as treasurer (1966-71) and then as secretary (1971-79).
St. Louisans Hear CPA
Leyton Broughton, a partner in the St. Louis office of Ernst & Whinney, addressed members of the Mason Contractors Association at their recent meeting in St. Louis.
A 21-year veteran of certified public accounting with the construction industry, Broughton spoke on "Cost Control and Cash Flow: Preventing Profit Run-off."
