Broad Range of Topics
A wide range of industry problems and opportunities were discussed in a series of seminars and workshops at the 14th annual meeting of the International Masonry Institute in Washington, D.C., June 24-27. Nearly 200 registrants and guests attended the four-day event.
Among the major subjects covered were the latest developments in the implementation of IMI's new national/regional training program and a description of IMI's new approach to regional market development. The latter calls for the creation of regional programs throughout the U.S. and Canada.
The advantages of regional market promotion programs were discussed by IMI trustees George A. Miller, executive vice president of MCAA, and Louis Weir, executive vice president of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen (BAC), along with Ray Lackey, executive director of IMI.
Bruce Voss, executive director of IMI's Apprenticeship & Training Program, reported on efforts of IMI and its two parent organizations-MCAA and BAC-to implement the new national/regional training program.
Attendees at the meeting were treated to a tour of Washington Cathedral, a classic Gothic style stone edifice which has been under construction since 1904, and a tour of Annapolis, Md., where they previewed the Brice House, a 200-year-old colonial mansion which is being restored and adapted by IMI to serve as headquarters for the International Masonry Center.
Other highlights of the meeting were:
An audio/visual presentation on IMI's programs and activities, introduced by W.C. Dentiner, Jr., co-chairman of IMI's board of trustees and president of MCAA.
A discussion of the need for a multi-million-dollar program to meet competitive challenges. Michael Carberry, executive vice president of Henry J. Kaufman & Associates, IMI's advertising/public relations agency, was the speaker.
