BIA Lends Support to Ellis Island Restoration
The Brick Institute of America announced it is donating brick and labor to create a brick sculpture wall in the Great Hall on Ellis Island, once the prime receiving station for immigrants coming to this country from 1893 to 1943. It is now used as a Visitors Center for tourists sightseeing on the island.
"We want to make a contribution that would show the significance of brick's role in building America," said Charles N. "Norm" Farley, BIA's corporate secretary. At a special ceremony, Farley presented a ceremonial brick to Ross Holland, director of Restoration and Preservation of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. The project is expected to get under way in 1985.

Burns & Russell Celebrates 194th Birthday
One of the nation's oldest ongoing businesses, The Burns & Russell Co., was honored recently at its 194th birthday celebration in Baltimore, Md., when city Mayor William D. Schaefer formally recognized the firm's five generations of progressive contributions to the community and to the masonry industry.
From its inception Burns & Russell has been associated with heroic enterprises. One of its original founders was in charge of the defense of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, when Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics of our National Anthem as he watched the British invasion fleet bombard Baltimore. The original buildings of world-famous Johns Hopkins Hospital are among numerous historic structures erected exclusively with Burns & Russell brick. The company is best known today for its development of Spectra-Glaze, a process for glazing concrete block.
