APPRENTICESHIP CONTEST

continued from page 25

Pictured (from left) Paul Eustace, Massachusetts Secretary of Labor; Frederick Salvucci, Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation & Construction; Governor Michael Dukakis: Guido Salvucci, G. Salvucci, Inc., and Charles Raso, Local 3 business manager.

Walter Crane, president of Local 15. Kenneth Sullivan of Local 1 and Barney D'Amico of Local 3 judged the contestants' brick piers on general appearance, level, plumbness and spacing. Each contestant was graded on a 10-point scale, with 10 being a perfect score.

Thomas McIntyre, international vice president of the Bricklayers Union, announced the winners: Christopher Medeiros (first place. Local 39, Fall River). Michael Nussey (second place. Local 6, Worcester). Douglas Kohm (third place, Local 15, New Bedford), David Scally (fourth place, Local 12, Lynn) and James Maloney (fifth place, Local 3, Dorchester).

The winner and second-year apprentice, Chris Medeiros, is a graduate of an IMI Bricklaying Training Center in Collbran, Colo. The Collbran Center is part of a network of National Job Corps Centers. From this pre-job training program, a graduate would then apply for further instruction in a formal apprenticeship program with a local union. For his winning efforts, Medeiros received $200, a trophy, an expense-paid weekend on Cape Cod, and much deserved recognition.

Sited in the shadow of Boston's Faneuil Hall and the original State House, this annual event drew together the kindred spirits of fellow bricklayers and was a public reminder of bricklaying's distinct and honorable craft. Many consider this yearly contest to be a celebration of an ancient craft which constructed not only some of the earliest buildings in America but in the world as well.
