W. P. Howle Honored by Texas Senate for His 50 Years as a Bricklayer
MCAA Oklahoma State Chairman W. P. Howle recently celebrated his 50th year as a union bricklayer and was honored by the Texas Senate and Midwestern State University.
Howle, whose mason contracting firm is based in Wichita Falls, Texas, received a proclamation passed by the Texas Senate citing him for meritorious service to the community. "It's almost impossible to go anywhere in this town and not see a building that W. P. Howle either laid the brick on or served as contractor for," said Sen. Ray Farabee (D-Wichita Falls), who made the presentation.
Farabee commended Howle "for being a builder and not a person who only tears things down."
Dr. Louis Rodriguez, president of Midwestern State University, presented Howle with nine large wall-prints of buildings Howle helped build in the city. "He's a fine businessman who works things the right way, and he's been a great friend to the University," Rodriguez said, citing more than 150 University scholarships he said Howle was responsible for being given to the children of construction workers in Wichita Falls.
Howle also is credited with "generously supporting" Texas Crippled Children's Hospital in Gonzales and having played a significant role in the planning and development of the Shriners Burn Hospital. He and his wife Ann celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on September 2, 1985.
Howle said the future of the bricklayers union in his part of the country "looks promising because of its youthful leadership and its promising apprenticeship program."
"The best part of this," he said, "is half of these boys served their apprenticeships under me. I don't think I have but one competitor here that didn't."
