Obituaries
Montie Smallen
Montie Smallen, a mason contractor for 45 years, died October 13, 1985 in a Portland, Ore., convalescent home. He was 82.
Mr. Smallen was born in Brazil. S.D., moved to the Portland area in 1903 and had resided for the past eight years in Clackamas. He was for several years president of the Portland Chapter of MCAA and had served as president of the United Masonry Guild of Oregon and of the Bricklayers Apprenticeship Council. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clackamas.
Mr. Smallen was very active in the affairs of the Mason Contractors Association of America and was one of its most ardent supporters.
Surviving him are his wife, Marie; two sons. Lewis "Bill" of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Ralph of Lavinia, Mont.; three daughters, Roberta Schmechel, Salem, Ore., Carol Short of Phoenix, Ariz., and Midge Collins of Medford, Ore.; one sister, Gladys Myers of Vancouver, Wash.: 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
R. R. Sneed
R. R. "Mr. Bob" Sneed, the dean of mason contractors in the South, died in mid-October in Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Sneed was one of the founding members of the Mason Contractors Association of America, having participated in the formation meeting held at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Mich., on August 28, 1950. In 1953 he was elected Secretary of MCAA and served two terms in that office.
Mr. Sneed was active in the affairs of the local Nashville Mason Contractors Association and in the Tennessee State group which was so prominent for so many years. "Mr. Bob" was Mr. Masonry, and until recently toured the various job sites in progress with his son, William, every month.
This giant of our industry will be sorely missed by his many friends and business associates.
Frank J. Zoubek
Frank J. Zoubek, past national treasurer of the Mason Contractors Association of America, died October 8, 1985, at Kenosha Memorial Hospital in Wisconsin.
Mr. Zoubek was born November 29, 1897 in Milwaukee. He came to Kenosha as a youngster, attended St. George Parochial School and was a graduate of Kenosha High School. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War I, he served from April 29, 1917 until April 17, 1919 with the 17th Aero Squadron. A leading mason contractor in Kenosha for many years, he retired in 1970.
Mr. Zoubek was a member of St. George Catholic Church: past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 973; American Legion Post 21 and past district commander of the Legion, and the Last Man's Club. He had been the announcer for the civic band concerts in Kenosha for several years.
On October 21, 1943, he married Cecilia (Cele) Grasser, in Milwaukee. His wife survives him.
