# Cooney Heads BIA
Nelson J. Cooney, 47, an attorney and trade association executive, has been named president of the Brick Institute of America.
Cooney joins BIA after having served as general counsel and vice president of communications for the American Trucking Association. "We believe Cooney's regulatory and legislative background, in addition to his public relations and communications experience, more than qualify him to be president of BIA," said David K. Cushwa, 3d, board chairman, in making the announcement.
A Baltimore native, Cooney is a graduate of Loyola College and Georgetown University Law School. He is married, has four children, and resides in Bethesda, Md.
# Dur-O-Wal Forms Rehab Products Division
Dur-O-Wal, Inc., Arlington Heights, III., has formed a Restoration Products Division devoted specifically to producing anchoring devices and accessories for use with building facades in need of rehabilitation.
Mario Catani, Dur-O-Wal president, said the new division will be headed by Stephen Getz, with William Morgan as sales manager. Both Getz and Morgan were formerly with Phillips Drill Division in Indiana.
Dur-O-Wal is a leading manufacturer of masonry, stone and concrete wall reinforcement products and has been active in wall reinforcement technology since its founding in 1939. It has seven manufacturing sites in the United States and Canada.
# Laborers/AGC Training Center Opens in Connecticut
Visiting the new home of the Laborers/AGC Education & Training Fund in Pomfret, Conn., recently were George A. Miller, MCAA executive vice president, and Carl Booker, director of jurisdiction, Laborers International Union of North America. The Training Center is a former 114-acre country estate built in 1903 for an industrial magnate. The Jesuit Brothers acquired the property in 1934 during the depression and added dormitories one year later. The center consists of administrative offices, classrooms, kitchen, dining room, gymnasium, student housing, and winter training areas.
# St. Louis MCA Launches Certification Program
A new program is being implemented to continue improvement of quality masonry construction in St. Louis. Sponsored by the Mason Contractors Association, the program will certify those area mason contractors who achieve and maintain a prescribed standard of professionalism.
The new program is also designed to promote increased public confidence in the managerial and technical abilities of certified mason contractors. The voluntary program of certification is open to any mason contractor in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
To qualify, a mason contractor must be actively involved in masonry construction, must have a demonstrated background of successfully and satisfactorily completing construction work, and make a commitment to take part in a program of continued professional and technical development. Each candidate will also be required to pass a written examination on a broad range of subjects related to brick, block and stone construction, tuck-Continued on page 29
