MASONRY
37th MCAA Conference
& Trade Show,
Dallas, Texas, March 14-18
As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life, and that is the approach the MCAA Management Institute has taken in planning the educational programs for MCAA's 1987 Conference and Trade Show to be held at the Loew's Anatole Hotel in Dallas next March. There is literally something for everyone.
As in years past, two days of seminars will comprise the Pre-Conference portion of the program. The sessions will cover three major aspects of masonry construction. "Stone Panels," "Construction Claims" and "Masonry Marketing-What's Available and How to Use It" on Thursday and Friday, March 12 & 13.
The Stone Panel seminar will feature as speakers Jim Amrhein of the Masonry Institute of America, Los Angeles; J. Gregg Borchelt of the Masonry Institute of Houston/Galveston; Turner Smith, who heads Masonry & Concrete Consultants, Inc. in Houston, and MCAA President Dee Brown. They will address topics such as "Engineering, Shop Drawings and Detailing," "Installation and Fabrication" and "Contracts and Liability." The final segment of this session will be a field trip of Dallas, led by Dee Brown, to inspect the many stone panel buildings completed or in various stages of construction.
Construction Claims Explored
Do you need help with your construction claims? Have you received all that you are due as a result of changes on your projects? Do you know when to file a claim, and how claims are often defeated? Have you implemented a claims avoidance program to identify changes and their associated cost?
Answers to these and many other questions will be fielded by John C. vanDyke, president of Construction Consultants Corp., Dayton, Ohio. vanDyke is a civil engineering graduate of the University of Oklahoma, and is licensed to practice in five states. He also is a member of the American Arbitration Association, the Construction Specifications Institute and the National Contract Management Association.
Sign up early for this seminar to learn the reasons, rationale and remedies of construction claims. Remember, good business is good claims administration.
Masonry Marketing
This session, titled "Masonry Marketing-What's Available and How to Use It," should be of genuine interest to any mason contractor wishing to expand his share of the masonry marketplace. Subjects to be covered include "Promoting and Building Reinforced Masonry," "Reducing Leaky Walls, Cracks and Efflorescence-Fix the Problem, Not the Blame" (turn to page 25 of this issue for more on the nagging problem with efflorescence), "Using Fire Safety to Promote Masonry" and "Using National Association Resources and Support."
The speakers for this seminar will be Jim Amrhein and Michael W. Merrigan of the Masonry Institute of America: Howard Noziska of the Minnesota Masonry Institute, and John Koller, manager of the Portland Cement Association's Allied Industries Department. Additional speakers from the Brick Institute of America, National Concrete Masonry Association, National Association of Brick Distributors and the PCA will explain their associations' resources and support in marketing masonry.
Official Registration Forms for the Pre-Conference Seminars appear on pages 10 and 11 of this issue.
