The new Milwaukee North Sheraton Hotel, Brown Deer, Wis., winner of an "Excellence In Masonry" award in the ninth annual competition sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Wisconsin, was designed as the first hotel complex in this rapidly growing village.
This facility designed by Py-Vavra Architects-Engineers, Inc. of Milwaukee consists of a 150-room guest tower overlooking the wooded adjacent Milwaukee River terrain to the east and south and the steadily growing commercial area to the west and north. The adjoining one-story public area of the hotel provides the conference center and other amenities. Everything was designed to provide a rural or northern atmosphere. The project, which opened in September last year, is experiencing "tremendous success" and a planned 50-room addition may soon be realized.
According to Arthur B. Py, Jr., president of the designing firm, "The selection of the exterior and interior earthtone brick was made early in the design stage to take advantage of its warm inherent qualities as a natural material that provides a durable structure with low maintenance. This brick further enhanced the project by providing an ideal material to form the the large, dynamic 60-foot diameter window which provides a mirror of the surroundings through its solar bronze reflective glass while maintaining a statement that relates to the native environmental surrounding area."
The owner of the property is Brown Deer Hotel Associates; the developer, Py-Vavra Development, Inc.: project architect, Gerry Vanselow; general contractor, Korndoerfer Corp., and Knuth Masonry, Inc., New Berlin, Wis., the mason contractor. (Special thanks to the Masonry Institute of Wisconsin, Norbert J. Hynek, executive director, for providing the color separations for this month's cover.).
